Once, twice, three times a winner. Our beloved Mackinac Island has once again been named the best, and we have to agree with USA Today's 10Best Reader's Choice voters. Mackinac Island really is the best summer travel destination, and not just here in Michigan. The island was named the best in the country.

“For generations, Mackinac Island has been a special place where families create lasting memories," said Mackinac Island Mayor Margaret Doud. “This award is a tribute to the dedication of our residents, businesses, and caretakers who preserve the island’s unique spirit and timeless appeal.“
Travelers nationwide vote for their favorite destinations in these popular polls for USA Today, and the island has been on their radar for years. In addition to previously being named the best summer travel destination in both 2024 and 2023, Mackinac Island was awarded the third best flower festival in 2025 for their popular Lilac Festival, and the second best fall travel destination in 2024.
“Earning this distinction speaks to the exceptional hospitality and authentic experiences our island delivers every year," said Todd Callewaert, President of Island House Hotel and Mackinac Island Convention & Visitors Bureau. "From the friendly team members to the scenic bike rides and fudge on Main Street, we're excited to see Mackinac Island continue to stand out as a one-of-a-kind destination.“

There's no bones about it, we love the island. It's always been a Michigan treasure, and now Mackinac is truly becoming a national one. From it's natural beauty, to it's historical significance, from fun festivals to fabulous fudge, the island is truly a unique place, and not just because it doesn't have cars.
On a recent visit, we hauled ourselves up to Fort Mackinac early in the morning and soaked in both history and the incredible view of downtown, starting to come to life as the first ferries tooted their way into port. Then, we hiked through quiet forests to Fort Holmes, and took in the panoramic view that just takes your breath away. Following a leisurely descent, passing noisy school kids laughing their way around horse droppings, hearing snippets of German and Italian being spoken, greeting everyone with a hearty Midwestern hello, we ambled through downtown doing both window and retail shopping.

We stopped for both an authentic Jamaican lunch and some of the best whitefish in the Straights, and then headed for an iconic drink on a sunny patio while we watched the ferries come in. A quick run to the dock, and we were sadly once again on the ferry rumbling past Windemere Point on our way to the mainland. Each moment was every bit as awesome as you can imagine.

“This recognition is a reflection of the unforgettable experiences Mackinac Island offers—quaint, car-free charm, natural beauty, and rich history that captivates visitors year after year," said Tim Hygh, Executive Director of the Mackinac Island Tourism Bureau. "It's an honor to see our island community celebrated as the best summer travel destination three years in a row.“
