EAST TAWAS, MI - Have you ever dreamed of staying in a historic Michigan lighthouse, waking up to the sound of waves crashing against the shore, and sharing the rich maritime history of the Great Lakes?

If so, the Michigan Lighthouse Keeper Program at Tawas Point Lighthouse might just be your dream getaway — if you’re willing to put in a little work.

Behind the Mitten recently had the chance to sit down with Don La Barre from the Michigan History Center, part of the Department of Natural Resources (DNR), to learn more about this fascinating program. The opportunity allows volunteers to live at the beautifully restored Tawas Point Lighthouse for two weeks while giving tours and educating visitors about its storied past.

A Hands-On Historical Experience

The Michigan Lighthouse Keeper Program isn’t just about soaking in scenic views — it’s an immersive, hands-on experience. Participants commit to 30 to 35 hours of volunteer work each week, helping with guided tours, engaging visitors, and performing light maintenance tasks. In return, they enjoy a rare chance to live in a historic lighthouse, experiencing the beauty and solitude of the Great Lakes from an entirely new perspective.

What It Takes to Be a Lighthouse Keeper

The program is open to teams of four, meaning you’ll need to round up some adventurous friends or family members before applying. Each team member pays $250 for the two-week stay, plus a $40 application fee per group. That fee covers lodging in the lighthouse, as well as official volunteer shirts and other materials. All proceeds from the program go back into the preservation and interpretation of the site.

“This is one of the most affordable ways to experience lighthouse living,” Don La Barre said on a recent episode of our Behind the Mitten podcast. “For $1,000 total, a group of four gets to stay in a historic lighthouse on Lake Huron for two weeks. It’s an incredible opportunity.”

A Lighthouse with a View—and a Fresh Makeover

Tawas Point Lighthouse is a beloved Michigan landmark, offering breathtaking views of Lake Huron and Tawas Bay. The structure recently underwent a $500,000 renovation to restore its tower, ensuring that it remains a beacon for both mariners and history enthusiasts for years to come.

“This lighthouse is in fantastic shape, and its location is top-notch,” says Behind the Mitten co-host Amy Sherman. “I’ve seen it in person, and I can say—it’s absolutely worth the trip.”

The Growing Popularity of Michigan’s Lighthouse Keeper Program

Programs like this aren’t unique to Michigan, but Tawas Point Lighthouse is one of the few in the state offering this kind of immersive experience. Similar volunteer lighthouse programs exist at other sites, each with slightly different requirements and commitments.

So, how competitive is the application process? According to La Barre, interest continues to grow each year.

“We see a mix of people applying—history buffs, retirees, families, and even younger folks looking for a unique volunteer experience,” he says. “People walk away with amazing stories and a deeper connection to Michigan’s maritime heritage.”
